Ma Huang through Myrtle

MA HUANG (EPHEDRINE) first appeared in the herbal text of a Chinese Emperor nearly 5,000 years ago. The plant^(1)s active constituent, ephedrine, is used in many decongestant formulas. BRANCHES and STEMS are used as the makings for an effective bronchial decongestant, and is used as a tea to combat head colds with runny nose, teary eyes, sneezing, hay fever, asthma, nasal and chest congestion, and post nasal drip. When combined with specific herbs that make up a decongestant to dry out sinuses and respiratory passages. Ma Huang is an energy booster and a more powerful stimulant than caffeine, and is also far safer, i.e., less brain-cooking than amphetamines for example. MA HUANG is sometimes successful in helping break a smoker away from nicotine addiction. MA HUANG is also recommended to promote menstruation, and is used as an aid to weight reduction. The fermented juice of one or more varieties of MA HUANG, or ephedra, and its stupor combined with its invigorating qualities were personified as Soma, and was used in sacrifice ceremonies as the divine link between man and the principle force in the cosmic all of all creation; such sacramental use of soma has been forbidden since Zoroastrian times, and for the same reasons casual consumption of beer, wine and liquor (alcohol) is discouraged (See: ALCOHOL entry) Rather than actually becoming closer to the cosmic oneness as was the desired goal for the ancient users of soma, such an illusion manifested as a result of brain cells being killed by the jillions, as in the case of alcohol use in modern times. Zoroaster, when he lived, proclaimed the "spirit" of Soma to be an evil demon (See: Discussion on TANTRIC YOGA). Exceeding recommended doses can cause nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness. See: EPHEDRIN. Also see: IODINE.
