Powdered it is administered for sleeplessness, fever, gallstones and melancholy. As late as the 19th Century it was still being used in Northern Greece to ward off calamities in general and to prevent miscarriage and abortion.

LICORICE (Glycyzrrhiza - Yashtimadhu) together with it^(1)s extract has been used by mankind for thousands of years. In China, 3000 BC, licorice was believed to have wondrous powers and was used in certain religious ceremonies. It was thought to prolong life and endow strength. When Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt was excavated, small pieces of licorice root were found. The belief was that licorice would arm the newly-dead with the power to ward off evil spirits. RHIZOME and ROOT is an herbal stimulant and energy booster used as a respiratory formula ingredient which helps to loosen mucus, dilate the bronchials, induce sweating and stimulate general resistance. Combined with other herbs, the formula relieves chest cold congestion, bronchitis, coughs and decreases excessive heat in the lungs. Also eases pain of coughing and liquefies mucus.
