Also chicken contains cystine, a natural amino acid which has a chemical resemblance to acetylcysteine, prescribed by medical doctors for patients with bronchitis and respiratory infections. Acetylcysteine was originally derived from chicken skin and feathers. HOT CHICKEN SOUP is the best known and most often relied upon remedy for a cold. There are hundreds of chicken soup variations that have proven over time to be useful. Both ³prevention² and ³cure² recipes in order to be worth their salt or low-sodium contain, besides the main ingredient, chicken, the following high-powered VITAMIN A and B VITAMINS, NIACIN and RIBOFLAVIN ingredients: Carrots, celery, cilantro, (hot) curry powder, dill, garlic, horseradish, onions, parsley, parsnips, and black pepper. Traditional chicken soup requires an actual chicken; a stewing hen is preferable, and added to that, plenty of garlic; one whole bulb per pot, and all or some of the ingredients mentioned above. This pharmacological brew should be brought to a boil and then allowed to simmer for a couple of hours. It is suggested that only half of the vegetables be cooked-down into the brew, for flavor; then for the sake of preserving the nutrients, just before serving, the remaining half of the vegetables be added. Instant chicken soup can start simply enough, with a couple of cans of chicken broth. This ³instant² soup can also handle a half can or so of prepared (meatless) chili beans, and a few spoons of commercially prepared ³thick and chunky² green chile salsa (mild is OK, and jalapena-hot might be better). To this add a large package of frozen mixed vegetables. Wa-Allah! The best remedy for a bad cold! NOTE: Low-sodium dieters might substitute ALLSPICE BERRIES, ALMONDS, and/or ANGOSTURA BITTERS for SALT. CHICORY (chichorium intybus - kasani) GREENS are especially high in free radicals fighting BETA CAROTENE, and VITAMIN C. (Also see: APRICOTS, ARUGULA, CANTALOUPES, CARROTS, COLLARD GREENS, DANDELION, ENDIVE, KALE, ROMAINE LETTUCE, PAPAYAS, PARSLEY, PEACHES, PUMPKINS (also see PUMPKIN SEED), SPINACH, SWEET POTATOES, SWISS CHARD and TURNIP GREENS, and/or SALAD GREENS. And see: VITAMIN A). CHICKORY TEA normalizes liver function. Dried and roasted Chicory tends to take the bitter edge off of coffee derived from low-grown Arabica and Robusta coffee beans. Its pungent roots, after being artfully roasted may be added to high grade varietal or regionals and blends of high-grown Arabicas; to enhance the aroma, deepen the color, and to add a subtly sharp and spicy tanginess, and a vigorous snap which further alerts the taste buds to the mellowness of an already more-medium bodied coffee as might be found in Hawaii¹s Kona, and East African, Jamaican, Indonesian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Central and South American high-grown Arabicas. |
