Muggles for Harry Potter Oppose CensorshipThe American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression has joined groups representing publishers, writers, librarians and teachers to form Muggles for Harry Potter to help fight efforts to ban the use of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books in the schools. Potter books were the most frequently challenged titles in 1999, according to the American Library Association. School officials in Zeeland, Michigan, barred teachers from reading the books aloud in class and required parental permission to borrow the books from school libraries or use them for book reports. However, most of the Zeeland restrictions were withdrawn as the result of a campaign by Muggles for Harry Potter. [Click to join Muggles for Harry Potter] ABFFE created a button for the Zeeland campaign. The two-inch by three-inch color buttons may be purchased online in the ABFFE store. Proceeds from the sale of the button are used to support the Muggles for Harry Potter Web site.
